If you’re moving to Spain (or the EU for that matter), one thing that often causes confusion is what to do about US prescriptions. The most important thing to know is that US prescriptions can’t be transferred to Spain. You’ll need to see a Spanish doctor to issue new prescriptions once you arrive.
Before leaving the US, ask your doctor for a written list of your medications, including the generic names, dosages and why you take them. You can also request to get a 90-day or longer supply to cover the transition period. Keep medications in their original bottles and carry them in your hand luggage when moving.
Once in Spain, see a doctor who can review your medication list and prescribe the local equivalents. Many common medications are readily available in Spain. Often they are less expensive than in the US. Some drugs that require prescriptions in the US may even be over the counter in Spain.
