What’s Changing And When
The Spanish government has announced that the digital platform (sometimes called MiResidencia in official updates) will begin its rollout in early 2026.
From that point, applicants will use this portal to file initial residency or visa applications, upload scanned documents and receive status updates. Some features, such as electronic signatures and automatic document checks against police and national databases are planned to be part of the system.
During the transition year, both the old paper-based procedures and the new digital system are expected to run in parallel. This means there could be a mix of processes depending on where you apply and when.
Immigration experts warn that the early months of 2026 may feel inconsistent until the digital platform is fully adopted across all consulates and extranjería offices.

These updates are part of the broader implementation of Spain’s Ley de Extranjería (Organic Law 4/2000, of January 11) and its implementing regulations in the Real Decreto 1155/2024 (approved November 19, 2024 in the Boletín Oficial del Estado). Those regulations set out how visa and residency procedures operate. These legal reforms give the Spanish government the authority to modernize application formats, establish digital processes, and consolidate administrative steps that were previously spread across different offices.
