Can We Quit Working And Move to Spain
Right after the New Year, we decided to put all of our effort into seeing how we could make our overseas move to Spain work.
We met with our financial planners to determine if we could actually do this and quit work. We’ve always been good and diligent about setting money aside over the years and investing it wisely. The good news was, yes, we could. That was one key point, because it’s a lot easier to emigrate to Spain if you’re not planning on working. It eliminates a lot of red tape.
We’ve always had the dream to stop working as early as we could. There’s too much to do while we’re still young. You never know what’s going to happen tomorrow, so we want to do all the things we want while we can. Plus if you can make it work, who wants to wait until 65 to retire?
With that good news, it was now time to research all of the hard things about moving out of the US.
- What kind of visa do we need for Spain and what does the process look like?
- Can we afford to live in Spain?
- Can we afford housing in the Costa Blanca?
- What about all the day to day things like banking, healthcare, cellphones, etc?
- How do we get around? Do we buy a car? Two cars?
- What’s the tax situation we’re getting into in Spain and still need to worry about in the US?
- How do we keep some sort of US address since we’ll sell our house?
- How do we get our things from the US to Spain?
And the list goes on.
That’s how we spent the early part of 2025. Research, research, research. Once we learned enough to know we could pull this off, the next piece was getting back to Spain and really exploring the area north of Alicante.
