Jávea Area Sunday Markets

On our house hunting trip last week, we decided to check out a couple of local Sunday markets within a 15 minute drive of Jávea. One in the small village of Jésus de Pobre and the other just a bit further down the road in Pedreguer.

Jesús Pobre Sunday Market

Sunday market

The Sunday market in Jesús Pobre feels small and is very local. From mid-September to May, it’s held from 900 to 1400. The hours switch in the summer from 1800-2300. Make sure you check timing before you go.

The market is set around the riurau in the center of town. A riurau is a traditional open-air agricultural structure that dates back to the region’s raisin industry in the 18th and 19th centuries when farmers used these long, arched buildings to protect grapes while they dried into raisins during unexpected rain.

Today it serves as a local gathering place and on Sundays is the location of the market. You’ll find local farmers selling fruits and vegetables, fresh bread, pastries, cheeses, olive oil, and handmade items. You’ll also find a few food stalls selling all kinds of local foods, snacks, coffee and tea. It’s very local and feels more like a weekly get-together than a shopping trip.

Pedregurer Sunday Market

Just a few minutes away in Pedreguer, the Sunday market is larger and is very different a really is more “flea market”. The streets in an industrial park on the edge of town are filled with vendors selling plants, clothes, household goods and plenty of everyday items at good prices. It’s very popular and busy, but isn’t really our type of market. There are a few food trucks, as well as a couple of stands selling fruits, vegetables and other food.

There is a Saturday farmers market in Pedreguer as well, so we’ll check that out next time and report back here.
